The Karunanidhi government cut the price of rice in public distribution shops to one rupee a kilogram.

In September 2008, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi declared that rice would be sold at one rupee per kilogram in Public Distribution System (PDS) shops. This went further than the DMK's 2006 campaign promise of rice at two rupees a kilogram. The measure extended Tamil Nadu's tradition of heavily subsidised food grains for ration card holders.
