Congress leader S. Satyamurti served as Mayor of Madras and pressed for the Poondi reservoir to improve the city's water supply.

S. Satyamurti was a leading Congress orator and legislator from Madras and the political mentor of K. Kamaraj. He became Mayor of Madras in 1939, at a time when the city faced an acute water shortage. He pressed the colonial government to approve the Madras Corporation's proposal for a reservoir at Poondi, about 50 km west of the city. The Poondi reservoir was built to augment the city's water supply and was later named after him.
