State Autonomy Conference held in Madras
· Chennai

Periyar and leaders from other states joined a State Autonomy Conference in Madras called by Chief Minister Karunanidhi.
Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi sponsored a State Autonomy Conference, held in Madras on 12 September 1970, and chaired its proceedings. Among those present were Periyar, Ajoy Mukherjee, then Chief Minister of West Bengal, and many members of parliament. The DMK government used the meeting to press for wider powers for the states, in parallel with the Rajamannar Committee's study of Centre-State relations. The ground it laid led to the state autonomy resolution passed by the assembly in 1974.
