Supreme Court strikes down the Communal G.O. in Champakam Dorairajan case

Madras State's caste-based Communal Government Order on college admissions was struck down by the Supreme Court.
State of Madras v. Champakam Dorairajan arose when a Brahmin woman contested the Communal Government Order, under which Madras State allotted college seats by community. The order was found to be at odds with the Constitution's guarantee of fundamental rights, first by the Madras High Court and subsequently by the Supreme Court of India. Delivered in 1951, the judgement set off large protests in Madras State, which had applied communal reservation since the days of the Justice Party. It led directly to the First Amendment of the Constitution.
