UNESCO added the Nilgiri Mountain Railway as an extension of the Mountain Railways of India World Heritage Site.

In July 2005 UNESCO added the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, running from Mettupalayam to Ooty, as an extension to the World Heritage Site of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. The metre-gauge line, opened in stages between 1899 and 1908, uses rack-and-pinion working on its steepest section. To preserve its heritage character, it still issues traditional Edmondson-style tickets for the Mettupalayam to Ooty journey.
