Gandhi conceives the Rowlatt hartal in Madras
· Chennai

While staying with C. Rajagopalachari in Madras, Gandhi conceived a nationwide hartal against the Rowlatt Act, observed on 6 April 1919.
In March 1919 Gandhi was in Madras, staying with C. Rajagopalachari, who had recently moved from Salem to practise law in the city. When news came that the Rowlatt Bill had been passed into law, Gandhi proposed that the country observe a general hartal, a day of suspended business, fasting and prayer. Rajagopalachari and other Madras leaders took up the idea. The hartal was first set for 30 March and then moved to 6 April 1919, when it was observed across India.
