A park restoring the ecology of the Adyar creek in Chennai opened and was named in honour of the Tamil grammarian Tholkappiar.

Encroachment and pollution had degraded the freshwater and estuarine environment of the Adyar creek in Chennai, and the Adyar Poonga project set out to bring back its vegetation. On 22 January 2011 Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi opened the first phase of this eco-park, calling it Tholkappia Poonga after Tholkappiar, the ancient Tamil scholar. Schools brought pupils there to learn about wetland conservation, eco-restoration and managing water.
