South Indian Liberal Federation (Justice Party) founded

· Victoria Public Hall

Non-Brahmin leaders including C. Natesa Mudaliar, T. M. Nair and P. Theagaraya Chetty founded the South Indian Liberal Federation, later known as the Justice Party.

On 20 November 1916 non-Brahmin leaders met in Madras and founded the South Indian People's Association and the South Indian Liberal Federation. The main founders were C. Natesa Mudaliar, T. M. Nair and P. Theagaraya Chetty. The organisation sought greater representation for non-Brahmins in government service, education and politics. It started the English newspaper Justice, from which the party took its popular name. The Justice Party went on to form governments in the Madras Presidency in the 1920s and is regarded as the forerunner of the Dravidian movement.
