Madras Presidency Association formed

· Chennai

The Madras Presidency Association was set up by non-Brahmin Congressmen to press for non-Brahmin representation inside the national movement.

Non-Brahmin leaders of the Congress met in Madras on 20 September 1917 and founded the Madras Presidency Association. Where the Justice Party pursued non-Brahmin interests from outside the Congress, this body worked for them from inside. Gooty Kesava Pillai was its president, and P. Varadarajulu Naidu was among its other leaders. The association called for seats in the legislatures to be reserved for non-Brahmins. Kesava Pillai afterwards quit the Congress for the Justice Party.
